We spread the front and back of this practice sheet over 2 days. The first day was a lot of modeling and guided practice. We began class the following day by completing the back side and going over it. Once we finished the sheet, we practiced Find and Flip a couple different ways:
- We pulled up an old state test. We used whiteboards and read each question, even if it was a multiple choice question. The students worked in groups to just flip the question into an answer format. For example: What is the theme? Flip: The theme is… The first group to agree on the flip and have the same flip written down stood up and chorally read their answer.
- The next day during Read to Self (independent reading) I let students read for the first round. The next round, they were given sticky notes to write a question and then correctly flip it with the answer. Most students wrote very basic, right there questions, but that was okay. I just wanted them practicing. For example, one student wrote something like Q: Who was Jake riding with? Jake was riding with… (p.14) I had the students write the page number down because they will go back and practice the A in the FAIRY method: Answering the question.
I didn’t spend too much time on the “A” because I will revisit once the student have been taught the second part of answering a question: Inserting the evidence.
Stay tuned for part two tomorrow to read about how I taught the students evidence based terms to use when citing evidence. This is probably going to end up being a textual evidence series of several posts. The “Poof of Proof” Textual Evidence Kit is so huge, I could probably write a post every day this week, so follow me on Bloglovin to make sure you get the updates!
