Do you struggle with students who easily get distracted during math?
DOODLE TASKS™ were designed to get and KEEP your students engaged every step of the way!
What are DOODLE TASKS™?
This is a combo that’s never been done before, it brings together the best of both task cards and directed drawings. My second graders LOVED directed drawings during the holidays or to pair with a writing activity, but never with math.
TASK CARDS + direct drawing = DOODLE TASKS™
Doodle Tasks™ can be used any way you’d like! I’ll break it down further later in this post, but they are math engagement activities that can be be completed independently, with partners, in small group math instruction, or as a whole class activity!
Take a look:
DIFFERENTIATION IS EASY WITH DOODLE TASKS™
Each time I create a set in the Math Doodle Tasks™ line, I make sure to include 2-3 versions to allow for easy differentiation if you choose to use them during small group guided math. Some teachers prefer to assign them via SeeSaw™ or Google Slides in Google Classroom so that different students can work on the same skill at different levels.
DOODLE TASKS™ DURING SMALL GROUP GUIDED MATH
Pull each math small group to your small group instruction area. Print out the directed drawing recording sheet or laminate a reusable doodle mat for each student. Alternatively, use whiteboards. Whatever floats your math instruction boat.
Begin the DOODLE TASK by deciding whether or not you want the directed drawing to be a mystery that is REVEALED, or if you are going to show students what the goal is:
THE PRO of showing your math students the first card/slide is it will have the learning objective included which is a great way to start your small group instruction. THE CON is it also has the directed drawing on it, so if you want the directed drawing to have an element of surprise that keeps the students guessing, then don’t show them this first card/slide.
When doing the DOODLE TASK with your math small group, you can use your computer to show the math problem and the directed drawing step by step. You can also print them out task card style and show one task card at a time. The directed drawing steps are quick and simple so that students can stay focused on the math task at hand.
DOODLE TASKS™ DURING WHOLE GROUP INSTRUCTION
- Prepare your area: You might want to have a space on your board where you will complete the directed drawing WITH your students. You can do this on the whiteboard, an anchor chart, or right on the recording sheet.
- Choose PowerPoint or Google Slides as a way to display each step and task one by one.
- Have your students record and draw on the recording sheet or on a whiteboard. If you choose to have them do it on a whiteboard, have them draw a line down the board so that the side with the drawing doesn’t get erased each time they write their answers.
DOODLE TASKS™ DURING MATH CENTERS
- BEFORE sending students loose to complete a DOODLE TASK on their own, make sure you do one as a whole group so students understand what to do.
- Print once, laminate a set and pop it into your math center! The task cards each have a number on them so you and your students will always know what order to complete the set in.
Doodle tasks™ AS A PARTNER ACTIVITY
- This is such a fun partner activity. Your students will LOVE being able to compare their drawings.
- What you need: One set of Doodle Task cards for each partner group. Two recording sheets if you want to be able to use it as a formative assessment of the math skill that they turn in.
DOODLE TASKS™ AS AN INDEPENDENT ACTIVITY
The math curriculum my second graders used had about the same number of problems that students had to complete independently as the Doodle Tasks™ do. Each set provides the opportunity to practice the math skill 15 times since there are 15 steps to each directed drawing. Afterward, students could move on to another task, or if they finish early they can add color and creativity to their directed drawing.
DOODLE TASKS™ DURING DISTANCE LEARNING
Distance Learning via ZOOM/Live Meetings: If you are currently teaching via distance learning, there are a couple of ways to use DOODLE TASKS™. If you are doing distance learning via ZOOM, this would be perfect to use as a whole group (or one on one) review, where you also draw with the class as you go. Since each set comes with a PowerPoint and a Google Slides file, choose the one you prefer and share your screen while using ZOOM or Google Meet.
Distance Learning via Independent Google Classroom/Online Assignment: If you assign independently via Google Classroom, have students add their answers directly on the screen and submit as an assignment (just be sure to use the setting “make a copy for each student.”) The drawing doesn’t need to be turned in, but encourage them add color and creativity to it then hang it up on the fridge 🙂
Distance Learning via Including in an Independent Work Packet: If you include it in an independent work packet, make sure the recording sheet is included.
All Doodle Tasks™ come with task card sets, PowerPoint file for Whole Group, and Google Slides to assign to individual students using Google Classroom.
I hope your students love these MATH DOODLE TASKS as much as we do!
